World heritage discovery - Fraser Island

The sunshine coast has something for everyone, from lazy weekend getaways to well-deserved, week long family holidays. whether you want to spend a day up in the hinterland, just potter around close to your mooloolaba beach resort or break out and visit some of our local tourist spots, the day is yours to enjoy.

One of the most special places to visit, while you are here at Mooloolaba Beach, is Fraser Island.

Day trips to fraser island

Well known for its spectacular coloured cliff sands and pristine rainforest environment, Fraser Island is well worth the trip. Its Aboriginal heritage gives Fraser Island a special character all of its own and the unique freshwater lakes (more than 100) and the diversity of flora and fauna, make this a trip you will never forget.

Day trips to Fraser Island have a free pick up in Mooloolaba so you don’t even have to worry about finding the ferry or parking your car. Most coastal pickups start around 6am from your Mooloolaba apartments, taking you up to Rainbow Beach for the ferry trip over to Fraser Island.

This is where it truly becomes exciting, because Fraser Island is 4WD country and your day is spent viewing this fabulous Island from specially designed and air-conditioned 4WD vehicles. You will be taken along the famous 75 Mile Beach, up along forest tracks into the rainforest, spending an hour or two swimming in the crystal clear freshwater lakes and relaxing over an Aussie style BBQ lunch.

The Island is 124 km long and covers 163,000 hectares and one of the reasons it was awarded a World Heritage listing is because the island is still evolving. You will see beautiful, natural rainforests growing on sand dunes at elevations of more than 200 metres, flora rich heathlands noted for their evolutionary and ecological significance, extensive wetlands with rare patterned ferns and immense sand cliffs and dune systems that are still evolving.

There is plenty of time to explore the rainforest and creeks and you might even see the local dingos and goannas. If you are a bird lover, then this is definitely a spot you will love, so don’t forget to bring your camera.

Fraser Island is one of the most significant World Heritage sites you will ever have the pleasure of visiting and it is right on our doorstep. Your wonderful day ends as you arrive back at the mainland around 5.30 pm and then the free transport drops you off at your mooloolaba accommodation in time for your evening meal.

Tourist companies that offer day trips to Fraser Island and free pickup and drop off at your Mooloolaba apartments include Tour Fraser and Fraser Island Discovery.
